Today’s exciting news in early childhood education is that Massachusetts will receive grant funding from the Early Learning Challenge. This funding, through Race to the Top, is worth $500 million to the nine states who won: California, Delaware, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, North Carolina, Ohio, Rhode Island and Washington. The grantmaking process was administered jointly by the Department of Education and the Department of Health and Human Services.
The goal of this challenge is to better prepare children ages 0-5 for kindergarten, through improvements to early childhood education. According to Deval Patrick, “Today’s announcement demonstrates our place as a national leader in education reform and achievement. These resources will help us reach kids at an early age, before achievement gaps form, to ensure they are prepared for lifelong success in school and beyond.”
The specific award amount will be announced in the upcoming days.
