Over the past couple of years, nonprofits and institutions of higher education across the country have begun holding 24-hour online fundraising drives. Harking back to the days of national telethons, giving days provide opportunities for communities of all shapes and sizes to come together in support of a cause or institution. Giving days also serve as an excellent opportunity for supporters to share their stories of philanthropy and organization spirit.
With over 97% of Wheelock’s students receiving some form of financial assistance, it is imperative that Wheelock build a stronger tradition of philanthropy as we move further into our second century of improving the lives of children and families. In 2016 Wheelock College is hosting our first annual Giving Day on March 30 to further this cause.
On March 30, we encourage alumni, students, parents, faculty, staff, and friends of the College to make a gift in support of the College. Equally important, we ask that you share your Wheelock story. Wheelock Giving Day is an opportunity for the College to highlight the importance of giving to Wheelock and to highlight community members near and far and what they give back to the world.
Keeping this in mind, rather than focusing on dollars or average gift size for our first Giving Day, we will be focusing on participation. Two generous anonymous donors have pledged $50,000 in support of the College if we have 250 individual community members make gifts on March 30. We’ll write more about the importance of matches and private gifts in support of the College over the next few weeks.
