A New Outlook on Politics

Mary Katherine BluntDoes the realm of politics make you feel dazed and confused? Want to impress your extended family members at Thanksgiving by bringing up some current events? The Political Science and Global Studies classes offered at Wheelock College provide a great foundation for beginners and give political enthusiasts a new outlook on politics.

I have always been interested in politics and part of the reason is because, as citizens of the United States, we are surrounded by politics everyday. I am currently enrolled in Gender and Politics, which has helped shape me into a deeper and more global thinker in terms of domestic and international politics. Originally I signed up for Gender and Politics thinking it would be a class that strictly focused on women in formal politics and how their gender affects their role. To my pleasant surprise the class was about much more than just women in politics.

Prior to this class I had assumed that sex and gender were the same, when in fact they are very different. (See how I snuck that fun gender and politics fact in there?) Along with becoming a more global thinker, I learned about many different world concepts that could be applied to much more than just politics. The knowledge of global concepts also equipped me with the understanding necessary to think about how people are so greatly affected by different policies from around the world. In my Gender and Politics class, we have discussed countries all around the world, from countries like Sweden to countries like India. Even if politics is not your forte, if you want to become a better thinker, writer or open up your mind, any of the Political Science or Global Studies classes will provide you with a great learning experience.
