WATCH: Wheelock Graduate Visits The Dominican Republic

Colleen Kavanaugh was hired as an elementary school teacher a few days after she graduated from Wheelock College. While working as a fourth-grade teacher in Ellis Elementary School in Boston’s Roxbury neighborhood, she saw an ad looking for volunteers to work at The Mariposa Foundation in The Dominican Republic during the summer. Seeing the program as a way to strengthen her understanding of many of her ESL students’ culture, Kavanaugh made a one-month commitment for the following summer. The Foundation’s mission closely matched Wheelock’s mission to improve the lives of children and families and Kavanaugh loved the students’ passion and drive. Today, she serves as the Foundation’s academic director.
