What’s Your Major? Elementary Education

Nicholas Quijano ’17 says classes in his Elementary Education major and Wheelock’s general education core courses have given him the skills and confidence to become an effective classroom teacher. “The classes have been wonderful,” he says “I’ve learned so much about how to teach children, how to use effective strategies…I feel totally ready. I want to start teaching as soon as I get out.” Quijano says he wants to teach in an inner-city setting “giving every child a chance because that’s what everyone deserves.”

“I want to start teaching as soon as I get out.”

He fell in love with Wheelock the minute he came on campus. “I knew that I wanted to be back in a larger city, but I wanted that close-knit community and Wheelock is such a great school that it offers both of those. It’s located in Boston, but I can walk around campus and know everyone, know my professors,” he says. While at Wheelock, Quijano has been involved with Best Buddies, an organization that provides a ‘buddy’ to people with intellectual disabilities. “It’s got such a great mission,” he says. “We do all kinds of trips around Boston and activities on our campus. I love hanging out with my buddy. and everyone has a great time.”
