What’s Your Major? Political Science and Global Studies

Tatianna Plefka ’18 says she was looking for something different in a college experience. “I knew I wanted to go to a school that pushed me to be a better person and when I read about Wheelock’s mission–to improve the lives of children and families–I was kind of blown away. It was the first time I had heard about a program that was really about helping other people that really inspired me.”

Originally from Philadelphia, she says she loved Wheelock’s Boston campus right from her first visit and felt that she had really found her community. “I loved that we were all working toward something much bigger, improving the world,” she says. Tatianna says Wheelock’s Political Studies program is unique in that all of her classes focus on what the world needs. “We’re not learning from the high-up politician’s perspective; we’re learning what the world needs, what can we do, and how can we do it.”

“We’re learning what the world needs, what can we do, and how can we do it.”

Tatianna is looking into studying abroad to help her gain an international perspective and decide what she wants to focus on after graduation, though she says she’s currently leaning toward the nonprofit sector. “Here at Wheelock, it’s been an incredible learning experience,” she says. “If you’re the kind of person who wants to broaden your knowledge about the world and how you, as a citizen, can impact the world, then the Political Science and Global Studies program is for you,” she says.
